Why it works
The Tuna and Water Diet works by depriving your body of its primary fuel source — glycogen. When you eat high carbohydrate foods, your body stores this in the form of glycogen. Glycogen is stored in the body with about 3 times its weight in water.
When you deprive your body of carbohydrates, the body first burns its stores of glycogen. When this fuel is consumed, the water retained by each molecule is released. This is why this diet is so effective, You will lose weight, but most of the weight lost will be in the form of water. Of course there will be fat loss too.
This is why the low carbohydrate diets are so effective. Of course, the Tuna and Water Diet is extreme, and is only intended for no more than 3 days.
The diet was designed for bodybuilders who need to get “defined” before a competition. The rest of us use it to quickly drop 10 pounds or so and to break sugar and junk food cravings. This diet will do that.
How to do the Tuna and Water Diet
Tuna and water. That’s it, for 3 days. Dave recommends enough tuna to get 1 to 1.5 grams of protein per pound of body weight equally spaced over 6 “meals.” He recommends a vitamin/mineral supplement, and taking Metamucil nightly, for fiber. The Problem With the Tuna and Water Diet
This diet is very difficult to stick to. It will require massive willpower. The good news is that it’s only 3 days. If you’re determined to see results, you can do this.
This is an effective short term diet. You will lose weight, but it is not an effective long term dieting solution. The body simply needs a greater variety of wholesome, whole foods. If your goal is to lose weight fast, the Tuna and Water Diet will help you do that. Once you’ve gone through the 3 days, however, you’ll want to add more healthy foods to the diet. Just be sure to restrict those processed carbs and sugars that caused you to put on all that weight in the first place.
